Key Components of a Training Program; Does Yours Include These?

The Parts That Make Up an Effective Training Program

At The Advice Store, we believe every training program must include these six components. Skip anyone, and you are setting yourself and your people to fail.

Training Need Analysis

Training Analysis

This includes Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why — is the critical first step in the training process. At The Advice Store, we will help you develop the analysis, get the right answers to these questions, and work with you to develop the perfect program for your organization. No one knows your business better than you, and we work with you every step of the way to determine your needs and begin a process that will make your training program a success.

Training Design

From the results of the analysis, we can work with you to begin designing just what your training program will look like. How it will be structured, who will lead and be involved in the administration, implementation, and delivery of the program, and what training will be delivered to each group of your staff.

Training Development

This involves more than writing up some manuals or developing a set of policies and procedures to follow. The development involves training material content, reference materials, follow-up materials, and a variety of tools to be used. Another important step in the development is the process by which the materials will be updated, delivered, and tracked.

Training Delivery

Depending on your organization's structure, many decisions will have to be made about the delivery of your training, including:

Who will deliver the training?

Are your trainers experienced in how to deliver training?

Will the training be in person, remotely, using computers, via the web, or a blend of formats?

There is more to delivering training than just knowing the information. Just because someone is good at their job does not make them good at training.

We offer a variety of advising and consulting services around training, and we can also deliver or facilitate the training and train your trainer programs.

Evaluation

An often overlooked yet critical component of training. There are a number of areas to carefully evaluate:

End Result: Are your people acquiring the needed skills and abilities?

The Materials and Tools: Are the training materials effective?

Trainers: Do your trainers have the skills and abilities to train?

Consistency: In there consistency in the what and how of your training?

Relevant: Is the information and training relevant to what the person needs?

Recurrence

It has been said that repetition is the mother of learning. At The Advice Store, we could not agree more. Unfortunately, recurrence or repetition is too frequently not a part of training. Training is about learning new behaviors or changing behavior and in order for these newly introduced skills and knowledge to become behaviors, the training must include recurrence to ensure the training sticks.

Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.
